Second only to Christmas, Mario Day (March 10 – MAR10) is the biggest holiday in our home. I’ve fought the video games, I’ve banned them, I’ve allowed binges, I’ve tried all the things and I’ve come to the conclusion that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.
Mario has a special place in the hearts of today’s young people (and young at heart people). Mario certainly deserves a little attention.
Here are some ways to learn on Mario Day:
History
Learn about the history of Mario. Where did he come from? Who created him?
Geography
Learn about Japan (Mario’s Birthplace). How was an Italian plumber thought up in Japan? I don’t know… But Japan is a beautiful country to learn about with many craft possibilities.
Math
Do you have the Mario Legos? USE THEM! Use the Mario or Luigi Lego and the start/end blocks as a timer. Take Mario, place him on the Start Block to start the timer (and music do-do-doot-do-do-doot-doot….) the have your child work on as many math problems (appropriate for their age) as they can before grabbing Mario/Luigi and placing him on the finish block. Can they get 5 problems? 10? Let the kids play 4 rounds or Mario Kart and figure out their fraction of wins. Then repeat with 6 rounds (they won’t mind!). Or, use these fun Mario themed Math sheets .
Science
Take an engineering approach and create Mario Karts out of Lego and balloons to race them.
Alternatively, you could learn to code video games on Scratch for free.
Do a Lego Build; either a set with instructions or try to make something from Mario in a free-build.
Art
If you haven’t found Art Hub for Kids yet, here it is. You are welcome. Learn to draw all your favorites in a gentle, supportive, and fun environment! Here is how to draw Mario!
Language Arts
Have your Mario-Obsessed student insert the Mario characters into a fairy tale. What would that look like if the three little pigs was all Mario Characters? Or Snow White? Alternatively, give them a creative writing prompt such as:
“You are walking through a park and suddenly a Whomp comes crashing down next to you. You look up and see….”
or
“While eating dinner, you hear the doorbell ring. You open the door to find Princess Peach. She says….”
