Our Favorite Reading Curriculum

Things in my homeschool change every year.  Ok, every semester. ALRIGHT…some things seem to change by the week.

However…

One curriculum that has stayed with us from the beginning is All About Reading.   I started out homeschooling trying to replicate school at home (hey, shhh, we all do it!).  After trial and error (and tears from all parties), we figured out what works for us.  While most of our curriculums were tossed aside or used in very non-traditional ways, the All About Reading curriculum stayed.

Let me tell you why it works for us:

  • Quick Lessons.  When everyone cooperates, 15-20 minutes is all we need for one lesson.
  • The stories are enjoyable.  My child likes DogMan and little else to read, but he enjoys the enchanting and silly stories that are in the readers
  • Quick prep time. The first year I used the curriculum, I spent an afternoon cutting out all the activities and getting them ready – from the entire activity book for the semester. It was great and all – no prep needed when it was time to learn – but I’ve learned that it doesn’t take much effort to cut them out right before the lesson.  Either way – easy peasy!
  • Very straight forward.  I can sit down for the lesson and know what we are doing and what I’m teaching with a quick glance. The guide is very easy to follow and well organized to show what is new, what is being reviewed, and what activities to do.
  • Activities are set up more like games, less like worksheets.  you simply flip through a flip-book, place the right words on a picture, or swat the correct answer.  There is no gluing and writing required.
  • And, can I add,  I’m learning rules and the “why’s” that I didn’t know before???

Can’t deny that he is having fun learning here!

There are so many reasons to choose this curriculum over others.  Some highlights of the curriculum itself are:

  • It uses the Orton-Gillingham approach

    • multisensory
    • direct
    • structured
    • recommended approach for dyslexia
  • It is Mastery Based

    • Move on when you get it
    • review is built-in through every lesson
    • extra practice ideas are provided in the lessons
  • Customizable

    • It is very easy to use the parts that work for your child
    • You can get the physical tiles or tiles app

All About Learning Press offers placement tests for their products online.  I am an affiliate for All About Learning, but I have years worth of pictures proving our love of their products, so I promise this is a genuine recommendation from a homeschool mom who successfully taught (or is teaching) active boys how to read.
