The Books
The Upside Down Magic book series is a delightful set of books that are both entertaining and helpful in navigating the tough situations kids find themselves in at school and sometimes even at home.
The Characters
The main character, Nory, is in a house full of magical family members. Her magic seems to be a bit off and she can’t fit in anywhere. Nory navigates through the feelings of disappointment, embarrassment, shame, and feeling like an outcast in general. At her new school, we watch Nory accept herself for who she is and become the best version of herself. You get an invitation to walk along with Nory as she figures out how special she is in the Upside Down Magic book series.
The Plots
Each book in the Upside Down Magic book series follows another one of Nory’s friends through their journey with their wonky magic. We watch Nory support one friend after another on their journey to accepting and mastering their powers.
Who should read these?
If you enjoyed the Zoey and Sassafras Series, this is a level up as far as length and content. Less scientific, more social awareness. We enjoyed these as read aloud books and I really appreciated all of the opportunities it provided to discuss tough feelings, relationships, and social situations. Kids can definitely read them on their own; the content is clean, but they are rich with discussion opportunities.
